Born in Spartinburg, South Carolina, Sherwood Young Reams (1812-1887) lived in Tennessee before immigrating to Texas in 1835. During the Texas Revolution, Reams served in Captain James C. Neill’s regiment and helped defend the Alamo. Although he was discharged on account of his health, he reenlisted in the Texas Army in July 1836.
